The breaking of a sword, the defiant but unthreatening posture of the two upright figures, above whom the mouths of cannons are covered with olive and laurels, presents us with a more complex ‘message’ than that offered by most war memorials. Vimy is a popular tourist destination but even the few that walk far enough from their cars to pass these figures rarely give them more than a passing glance let alone pause to look more closely, at this or indeed any other of the symbolic figures and wonder what they might be trying to convey. To be sure the ‘message’ of most war memorials is unremittingly the same, but some have deeper stories to tell.
