In the post Cold War world the ‘secret’ bunkers became more widely known and now totally redundant. Some have been taken over by enthusiasts who market them as museums – ‘secret’ and educational of course.

Their homely and amateurish displays do not altogether detract from the fact of the reasons for their existence but there is little to help us understand the mentality that conceived them. The fact that Britain’s nuclear missiles (soon to be upgraded at considerable expense) pack as big a punch as the bombs these bunkers were a response to, is not remarked on in the exhibits or during most of the school visits.

Sites which are a testament to the madness that was ‘mutual assured destruction’ (yes, MAD) do little to explore the reasons for it, let alone how to remove the danger of nuclear weapons from the world.
