The silence struck individuals with an irresistible force. People were swept into the collective emotion.
Just before eleven o'clock, the boys of Bradford Grammar School assembled in the main hall and members of the school O.T.C were drawn up on the terrace. The King's proclamation was read and upon the first maroon being fired from the Town Hall, the cadets were brought to attention, and their officers saluted as the Union Jack was dipped. After the period of silence the boys sang the national anthem.
